The Princess Auto Players' Championship, of the Grand Slam of Curling series, is returning to TMU's Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto running April 11-16, 2023.
The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tour resumes for its crown jewel event, the Princess Auto Players’ Championship, beginning Tuesday at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Featuring the top-ranked teams of the season, it’s tough enough just to qualify for entry into the major tournament never mind raising the trophy at the end of the week with the best-of-the-best from around the world in action.
The Princess Auto Players’ Championship will feature 12 of the top men’s and 12 of the best women’s teams from across the globe competing for the crown jewel of the Grand Slam season. Top teams include defending champions Team Hasselborg (Sundbyberg, SWE) and Team Mouat (Stirling, SCO) and reigning Olympic gold medallists Team Edin (Karlstad, SWE). The event will also include must-watch Canadian fan-favourites, including Team Gushue (St. John’s), Team Homan (Ottawa), Team Bottcher (Edmonton), and Team Jones (Winnipeg). Full broadcast schedule and complete team lists are below.
Skip Bruce Mouat, vice-skip Grant Hardie, second Bobby Lammie, lead Hammy McMillan and their fifth player Kyle Waddell spent a joyous night with their support team, friends, and family after claiming their first world title together and Scotland’s first for 14 years in the men’s event when they beat hosts Canada 9-3 in Sunday’s final in Ottawa.
Broadcasting live from the Mattamy Athletic Centre in the heart of Toronto, Sportsnet’s expert broadcast team is set to deliver exclusive insight and analysis. Veteran play-by-play announcer Rob Faulds is set in the broadcast booth alongside celebrated Canadian Olympic medallists and curling analysts, Kevin Martin, Mike Harris, and Joan McCusker. Olympic gold-medallist Jennifer Jones will also be returning to the booth for select broadcasts throughout the event.
Right from the start of the event’s run in Toronto, the record books were re-written. Scotland’s Team Muirhead became the first non-Canadian club to win a Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling championship in 2013 and Eve Muirhead also became the youngest skip to capture a title in the series at age 22. History continued to be rewritten last year when Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg became the first skip in the women’s division to complete a career Grand Slam.
