Franklin is coming off a narrow decision loss to Dillian Whyte, which showed that the previously untested American does indeed have the skills to hang with quality operators. Joshua is still a sizeable favorite thanks to his impressive body of work, but this is by no means a tune-up. “Joshua vs. Franklin” will also feature undefeated Heavyweight puncher, Fabio Wardley, squaring off with struggling colossus, Michael Polite Coffie, and the latest from Tokyo gold medalist, Galal Yafai.
The 33-year-old has been keen to usher in a new era for his career after back to back defeats as he looks to get back in the title picture, stating: "We’re only looking forward and I see a bright future and that kind of keeps me in good spirits." But could there be another bodyblow to the Englishman's career if he slips up against unfancied Franklin? And how can you watch the bout?
Whole families - who wouldn’t usually know a left hook from a fish hook - would gather around their TVs and pay PPV money to watch the bad-boy-done-glorious transcend the sport.
Paired up with another new trainer in Derrick James out in Dallas, a career-heaviest AJ needs to bounce back in convincing fashion as he still eyes the blockbuster showdowns in boxing’s blue-riband division - with talks of a potential summer bout with Tyson Fury mooted once again.
Retirement talk has followed the former Olympic champion since consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, the last of which came in August.
The fight with Franklin at the O2 Arena will be Joshua’s first without a world title on the line since 2015.
Several undercard fights will be broadcast before Joshua and Franklin square off. Some of these include Matteo Signani vs. Felix Cash for Signani’s European Middleweight title, and Craig Richards vs. Ricards Bolotniks for the vacant Inter-Continental Light Heavy title.
Joshua, 33, started boxing at the age of 18. A former two-time heavyweight champion, he is now 2-3 in his last five fights, having lost once to Andy Ruiz and twice in a row to Oleksandr Usyk. With issues surrounding an undisputed title fight between Tyson Fury and Usyk, a win could propel Watford-born Joshua back into the Fury sweepstakes.
