Plant has already faced Alvarez before, losing by 11th-round knockout, while boxing fans have been desperate to see the Mexican take on Benavidez ever since.
‘The Red Flag’ Benavidez was initially stripped of his title after testing positive for cocaine in 2018, before winning it back and then losing it again by missing weight ahead of his fight with Roamer Alexis Angelo in 2020.
With a title shot on the line, Benvidez and Plant are set to put on a show as they look to give themselves a chance at regaining their championship belt.
With Canelo occupied for the year at least, this is a battle to establish top dog in the division in his absence. Benavidez (26-0-0, 23 KOs) is unbeaten, but has lost this title twice before- once on the scales, once to a drug test. So he’s hoping to stay at the top and prove his consistency now. Plant (22-1-0, 13 KOs), meanwhile, will be aiming to prove he still belongs at the pinnacle after his pretty sound loss to Canelo. There’s also a bit of personal beef between them- no deep history, but they do seem to genuinely not like each other. It should be a good one.
Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champion, lost the belt to Canelo Alvarez in 2021. However, "Sweethands" got back in the win column with a vicious knockout of Anthony Dirrell in October. During that fight camp, he started working with trainer Stephen “Breadman” Edwards, who has advised Julian Williams, Steven Upsher Chambers, and others. It has made a difference in his fighting style.
Get ready to witness the intense showdown between Benavidez and Plant as there are a few different streaming options to choose from. Fans can purchase the pay-per-view event directly from Showtime, without needing a subscription to the network. Additionally, traditional cable and satellite options also provide access to the fight.
But the two-time full WBC champion is likely to face his toughest test to date against former IBF title-holder Plant, who is on the comeback trail after his own knockout defeat by Canelo in a massive undisputed clash back in 2021.
Having knocked out the ageing Anthony Dirrell in brutal fashion in October, ‘Sweethands’ is ready for another significant challenge at the MGM Grand Garden Arena tonight as he tries to inflict a first career loss on the hugely talented Benavidez in what is a huge grudge match.
